April 14 Myakka State ParkWe spent the Spring Break weekend at Myakka State Park. We arrived on Friday afternoon, and upon getting to the campsite we discovered that the three campsites that we had reserved (48, 49, and 50) were VERY, VERY, narrow, and that we had a road on BOTH sides of our site. Not ideal, but we made due. The entire campsite was gravel and hard packed dirt. We lost more than one tent stake trying to get our tents up. There were nicer sites in the park, and if we go back, we will be much more careful in our selection of a camp site!
Once we were settled in we took a ride around. Although we found our site lacking, the park itself is beautiful, with a nice sized lake filled with many, many alligators. We took a walk out to the canopy trail, which is a min-suspension bridge in the tree tops, with a 74 foot lookout tower on one end. We were able to see the entire park from here.
Jared spent most of the weekend on his bike, which is the most that he has ridden since we took the training wheels off last year. By the time we left on Sunday, he was skidding to a stop and bolting around the campsite like a seasoned pro. There was plenty of paved road and dirt paths for biking, as well as hiking. I would definitely like to go back and spend more time hiking and biking around the park. It appears that the three days we were there, we barely scratched the surface.
